The Importance of Fielding Drills in Baseball

Fielding drills are an important part of any baseball practice, as they help players improve their defensive skills and become more confident in their ability to field the ball. There are many different drills that can be used to improve fielding, and it’s important to choose drills that are appropriate for the age and skill level of the players.

What is the Five Cone Fielder’s Agility Drill?

The five cone fielding drill is a drill that is used to help players improve their footwork and body positioning when fielding ground balls. It involves setting up five cones in a line, with the first cone placed a few feet in front of the player and the other four cones spaced a few feet apart from each other. The player starts at the first cone and works their way down the line, fielding ground balls hit to them at each cone. This drill helps players practice moving to their left and right, as well as getting their body in the proper position to field the ball. It is often used with young players to help them develop proper fielding technique.

How to do the Five Cone Fielder’s Agility Drill

  1. Create a circle focus where we’re gonna step into when the ball is hit.
  2. When the ball is hit, go out and around the first cone, set up, then back pedal.
  3. Go gut and around the second cone, set up, and back pedal.
  4. Go out and around the glove hand side cone, set up, and back pedal.
  5. Go for backhand play, drop a knee, chest over the ball, and back to the circle
  6. Go for a deep forehand play, set up, and back pedal
  7. Go through it again.

The five cone fielding drill is helpful for youth players because it helps players improve their footwork and body positioning. By practicing fielding ground balls at different angles and distances, players can work on their footwork and body positioning to get in the best position to field the ball. Furthermore, it helps players build confidence. By practicing and getting reps in a controlled environment, players can build confidence in their ability to field ground balls and make plays in game situations. Overall, the five cone fielding drill is a useful tool for helping players improve their fielding skills and become more confident defenders on the field.
